Poetry - Mrs. Teets Grade 8

FROM Jason Reynolds- The importance of the ELEVATOR
"I am a metaphor addict. In this book, because I chose to write it in verse. You can create all kinds of symbolism and metaphors that poetry and verse leans towards. So I wanted it to mimic what it feels like to be angry. What it feels like to be traumatized and pained. What it feels like is claustrophobia. It feels like is tightness and coldness, steel, jagged movements and vertigo. All the things that an elevator brings is what it feels like to be that angry."

Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds

READER'S RESPONSE-- What do you think Will decided to do at the end of the novel?
STATION 1-FIFTEEN By William Stafford - IMITATION POETRY
Will is fifteen years old and facing the challenge of making adult decisions that may have lasting consequences. Compare Will’s conflict in Long Way Down to the conflict of the speaker in William Stafford’s poem “Fifteen”. Think about a time when you were faced with a moral dilemma. What choice did you make? Write a narrative poem or narrative essay about your own experience.

"Fifteen" is a poetic retelling an experience the narrator had at age 15. It is thematically focused on youth, maturity, responsibility, honesty, and coming of age. The poem opens with a summer setting on a road, where the narrator comes across "a motorcycle with engine running as it lay on its side." The boy picks up the motorcycle and walks it back to the road, feeling an instant connection with the machine and imagining the possibility of riding it off into adventure. He stands with the motorcycle for a moment, indulging his imagination before remembering that the wrecked motorcycle must have a rider. The boy finds the rider and helps him back to his motorcycle. Before he rides away, the nameless rider calls the narrator "a good man" as the boy "stood there, fifteen."

Pros
1. Responsibility-Completing a homework assignment may be beneficial to a student's future more than some may realize. When students get older and are told to do certain tasks for their job(s), it will be their responsibility to complete said tasks. HW, in a way, trains them to know that if they're designated a certain task, it must be completed or trouble will follow.
2. Being Prepared for Tests and Quizzes-Most assignments help students with preparation for future tests and quizzes. Some teachers even take the same or similar questions you see on homework assignments and use them for future tests/quizzes.
3. Teachers Can See Progress of Student-If a student isn't doing well on their homework, the teacher will notice and reach out to help them if they see fit.
Cons
1. Stress-Some teachers give an abundance of homework knowing  their class isn't the only class students have to worry about. This leads to stress, lack of sleep and frustration - a bad combo.
2. Less Time To Socialize-If you have a pile of responsibilities to complete, how can you find the time to socialize with others? Being swamped with too much homework and no time to do anything else could resort to complications later on in life.
3. Less Family Time-In a newspaper article I read a few weeks ago, parents were complaining about how much homework their kids have to endure which cuts back on their family time. Family time is very crucial and should always be valued. No one should be getting so much homework that they can't spend time with their loved ones.
